Identifying vaccine injury after years

I had fully vaccinated my elder son without being aware of the vaccine injury symptoms that were being presented after each vaccine. I actually realized his vaccine injury only after the final booster shots of MMR and DTaP that are given before kindergarten. 15 minutes after the shot, when we reached home, my son just curled up into a bundle and fell asleep in my mother in law’s lap with nothing to speak or look at. My eyes opened that day.

When we decided that we must recover our child from this and started searching for answers, we found homeopathy. The first thing my homeopath wanted was history from pregnancy, birth and all the way till the current age of the child including a detailed immunization history. He was 5 and 1/2 years old at the time. My younger one was 1 1/2 years old.

Writing this history was not easy. It was a process that took me a week. If any parent has to write such history for their child, here are some useful tips.pexels-photo-208544.jpeg

Warning: You will be surprised at what you find. I was surprised to discover that some tics that my son had when he was 3 1/2 started after the flu shot he was given that year. The ophthalmologist had no idea or explanation for this at the time.

A few questions about antibiotics for children

I was contemplating on a lot of things as I was recovering from a bad bout of cold last week. Being a family that uses homeopathy and natural medicine during illness and also on a regular basis, I could not help but go back to the past when we were more towards allopathy for health care.

When we were using pharmaceutical drugs both prescription and over the counter, the most common for kids would be Tylenol and Advil for fevers , Benadryl and Claritin for allergies and Amoxicillin as an antibiotic for ear infections as prescribed by the doctor. Thankfully my second child did not go through this. He has never had to have antibiotics because he never got any ear infections. He would get fever from anything that is going around, but I didn’t have to give Tylenol or advil because I became more aware of how the body worked during illness.

Response to WA Post article about Vaccines

Recently a friend of mine shared an article written on Washington Post  a while ago about vaccines. This seems to be one of the popular articles that seems to be making rounds in the social media as well even though it is pretty old. As I read through the article, I realized that all the information presented in the article lacked in depth research. I am adding the information that everyone needs to know for each of the questions in the article above. These are my answers to the same questions in the article.

  • Why do kids have to get so many shots at once?

The response fails to inform the readers about the ingredients present in the vaccines but instead only talks about the benefits of the CDC designed vaccine schedule. The ingredients are listed in the CDC website and it is not just the virus or bacteria. Read the list of ingredients present in each vaccine here( ).

  • Isn’t getting all these shots hard on the immune system of such young children?

Again a misleading response which builds on the first. The response misleads the readers to think that only the virus or     bacteria is present in the vaccines. This is not true. Still no mention of mercury, aluminum, MSG and several questionable ingredients. We don’t expose infants and children to the harmful substances present in the vaccines around our house. (more…)

How much do doctors know about vaccines?

We trust our doctors without question sometimes. It is understandable to do that because we assume that it is their job to be aware of everything in the field of medicine. I was someone who trusted doctors with my child. I accepted their suggestions without question. I would like to share something that happened in my first son’s life when he was 6 months old. Years later I discovered some information that has changed my trust in doctors. I still want to give them the benefit of the doubt because they are humans to like us and have the same 24hours in a day and too many things to do in their busy stressful lives as well.
Now to what happened when my son was 6 months old. We had planned to visit India so that the grandparents would see the baby. We had the tickets booked for us to visit in a month. The plan was that I would travel with the infant first and my husband would join me a month later.

Our regular pediatrician advised that we visit a travel clinic before we leave for the trip for travel advisory. As a mother I was excited to see my son making attempts to crawl at 6 months of age. We. visited the travel clinic and the doctor gave my son a flu shot and also the MMR. We as parents were told that it was better to give the shot than risk the disease overseas. Since we were naive new parents we didn’t know what questions to ask, and we approved the Flu and MMR shot. 3 weeks later when we were in India my son’s crawling attempts slowly turned into frog hops. VAERS Database

The VAERS database is the place where any vaccine injury is reported. It is natural for everyone to assume that the numbers in the VAERS system is an accurate representation of vaccine injury cases. But this is not true. It is an under reported system. Doctors do not report most of the cases to VAERS at all. Does this mean that there aren’t significant cases worth reporting?

I see a few reasons why the vaccine injuries are not reported

1. The information sheet that parents get at the doctors office does not provide adequate information.

2. The doctors are not given any incentive to report in VAERS.

3. Lot of parents do not make the connection with vaccines.

So how can the VAERS database be made from under reported to adequately reported?

One thing I feel can help is to give the parents a fact sheet about VAERS as well which will create awareness among the parents. The parents should also be provided the lot and batch number of the vaccines their child received.

The CDC should also update the Vaccine Information Sheet to reflect the time until which parents need to look for vaccine reactions. Parents assume that it is only one or two days, wheras an adverse reaction that is gradual would even manifest a month later OR provide the vaccine inserts to parents one week before the well baby check up. Let the parents read, look at family history, ask the doctor any questions they have and then make the decision.

Parents please share how the VAERS can be improved.

After birth

Right after he was born, my son was given the Hepatitis B and Vitamin K shots like they do in all the hospitals. We were moved from the child birth room to a normal room in the hospital. For some reason, they did not do much of skin to skin contact between mother and child at that time.

We were waiting for a lactation consultant to help us with breastfeeding. Despite me thinking that it was a natural and easy thing for a mother to nurse her child, the opposite was true. Our son could only latch with the nipple shield, which at the time I thought was a failure on my part. This was one of the truths that all the books and articles online wont tell a pregnant mother. Breastfeeding is not natural for everybody, it is a struggle at the beginning.

24 hours after child birth, we were discharged from hospital and sent home. That evening as the baby cried out of hunger and I tried to nurse him, I felt like I did not have much milk to offer the baby. It felt crushing to me that I was failing my baby. I sent my husband to get some formula from the store and fed him. This is another new experience in life when all that knowledge did not help. This was because no one tells you that it will take more than 48 hours for a mother’s body to produce milk. I wish I had known this at the time. After many attempts of pumping and trying to have my son nurse, I was relieved to have a milk supply 3 days later. But by this time, the baby got accustomed to the formula than my milk. With a lot of struggle and learning along the way, I was able to nurse him upto 10 months though not exclusively like I wanted to. (more…)

My experience of child birth

It was a mid spring night. Even though the trees showed off their spring blooms, the weather was still rainy and cold. I could hardly sleep because I was at the end of my third trimester and my active baby kept me awake at nights.

When I went to the bathroom I felt my water break. My husband was driving me to the hospital with my mom in the backseat.

With hours of reading pregnancy and child care and child birth books, articles and also taking classes, I was pretty sure we were ready and knew how to handle it all. When we finally reached the hospital and was admitted, my contractions were very mild.

My Obgyn visited me around 6am and saw my smiling face and remarked” You look too happy to be in the delivery room. We have to induce labor since the water has broken.” I would realize a little later that she was right.  (more…)
